Greta Gerwig didn'ttake home the Oscar for Best Director during Sunday night's Academy Awards. That honor went to Guillermo Del Toro for The Watch Sex (1994) Part 1Shape of Water.
But before opening the envelope, presenter Emma Stone gave Gerwig a shoutout for her role as the sole woman nominated in the directing category.

While some praised the line, as many have noted on Twitter, Stone's choice to draw a line between the category's male nominees and Gerwig ignores that two of the men nominated – Jordan Peele and Del Toro – are also people of color.

Gerwig was just the fifth woman in Academy Awards history to be nominated. Her film Lady Birdwas also nominated for Best Picture.
Peele, nominated for his film Get Out, was just the fourth ever black directing nominee.
Del Toro's The Shape of Water took home Sunday's award for Best Picture.
