Last week,Room Salon College Girls [Uncut] Nikon Asia released a list of 32 brand ambassadors spanning Australia, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. People quickly noticed a glaring problem: it was all men. Apparently, in its search across multiple continents to find photographers to promote its new D850 camera, Nikon couldn’t find a single woman.
Nikon is far from the only camera brand that’s guilty of this. Scan Cannon, Fuji or Sony’sambassador list and the lack of diversity -- especially when it comes to gender -- jumps out at you.

Nikon’s 2016 annual reportrevealed that women account for just over 10 percent of the company’s employees. In all aspects of the industry, women face underrepresentation again and again. The prospect of tackling such a deep-seated problem can be overwhelming, but people are starting to speak up.
Daniella Zalcman founded Women Photograph to combat the lack of diversity in the industry.
“As much as I enjoy yelling at people and institutions who are not actively working to make the photojournalism industry a better, more diverse space (possible understatement), I'm also only interested in yelling if I can come up with an accompanying and sensible solution,” she wrote on Facebook.
Zalcman approached Nikon about funding the next round of grants for Women Photograph. If successful, she could fund female and non-binary photographers from her roster of 500 documentary photographers located across 87 countries.
While we wait for Nikon to get it together, here are 32 amazing photographers from Women Photograph. Their work spans the globe, shows us stories from all walks of life, tells us about their beauty and struggle, and proves that our diversity is what makes us amazing. Best of all, they’re as diverse as their stories.
