Just ask Vine co-creator Dom Hofmann, who hit fans of the now-defunct looping video app with some unfortunate news Friday: He's postponing development of the app's successor indefinitely.
Hoffman hit fans with a ray of sunshine in November when he announced he was working on bringing Vine back from its Twitter-induced death. Alas, like Sisyphus barely shy of the peak, Hofmann's digital boulder came crashing back down. Again.
SEE ALSO: Let's not forget the black Vine stars that turned the app into an artHofmann dropped news that development of V2 (as the proposed reborn platform was tentatively called) was being halted via the company's community forums, noting that in the end, he couldn't see a way past the "financial and legal hurdles."
"I didn’t expect to write this even a few weeks ago, but I’ve made the very difficult decision of postponing the V2 project for an indefinite amount of time," he wrote. "Again," he added, "this is indefinite, which means that it could take a long time. But it’s necessary."
Fans took the news poorly.

And in a cruel twist, Hofmann left fans just enoughhope to make it impossible for them to truly let go.
"We’ll keep these forums up as a way to continue discussion," he noted, "and of course it will be the first place for all future announcements about the V2 project."
So there you have it. V2 is dead for now. But it may be back later. Maybe. But probably not.
Either way, feel free to pour one out for your six-second looping dream of Vine's redemption. It was good while it lasted.
