Disney+ is Woman Who Does as Her Oppa Wishes (2024)for families, and they've got the butt censorship to prove it.
Over the weekend, film lover Allison Pregler tweeted about the streaming service's take on the 1984 movie Splash — uncovering a buttocks obscurant disturbingly akin to Tom Hooper's Cats.
Starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah as a landlubber and his mermaid girlfriend, the fantasy rom-com shows the pair clandestinely meeting on a beach where Hannah kisses Hanks before sprinting into the ocean. Though clearly nude, Hannah is styled so that her long locks cover most of her body, showing only a small glimpse of her bottom during a dive into the water.
But, it appears that small glimpse was deemed too much for Disney+'s kid-friendly audience. So instead, it was replaced with what one Twitter user called "a giant shag carpet for a butt."
Here's the original for comparison, as seen in a version available for rent and purchase on YouTube:
Via GiphyDisney+ notes the content edits in a disclaimer at the start of the movie, and has increased the film's initial MPAA rating from PG to PG-13 for its listing on the site. (For what its worth, Disney+ fans on Reddit initially spotted the edits in early February when the film began streaming and most were just as disturbed then.)
Despite the effort put towards concealing Hannah's bottom, it appears most (if not all) of the rest of Splash — including scenes where Hannah's half-nude character is experimented on by cruel scientists and Hanks' character is asked by reporters if he "makes love to [his girlfriend] in water" — was left unchanged. Splash's description still cautions viewers of "tobacco depictions."
